Crayon Removal From Walls With Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

by Ann
(Illinois)

Ann has shared her tips for crayon removal from walls using a Magic Eraser, along with a couple other ways she's used this cleaning product around her home.

Ann says:

The Mr. Clean Eraser saved me from having to repaint my whole house. We have eggshell white walls in every room and my kids colored on every wall and both sides of every door before they turned three.

We were about to give up and just repaint. I bought the original type of erasers and it took two whole packs, but I was able to remove all of the crayon marks from all the walls and doors.

In addition, this product worked on the furniture and kitchen appliances to remove paint markers from the surfaces without hours of scrubbing or ruining the finishes.

I was very happy with the results and keep these as a staple for cleaning behind two active three-year-olds.

I thought the price was high when I first bought them but it turned out to be well worth it when I didn't have to buy paint and take the time to prime and paint all my walls.

I've used this awesome little product on my walls, doors, baseboards and facing, kitchen table, entertainment center, dresser, the outside of my refrigerator, leather couch and leather coffee table. I'm sure with these two kids I'll find even more ways to use it soon!

Taylor says:

Thanks Ann for sharing your tips for crayon removal from walls.

It is amazing what kids can do when your back is turned, isn't it?

by Kristyne
(Detroit, MI)

Kristyne says:

Simply spray a soft cloth with WD-40 (yes, the stuff hubby uses) and wipe the crayon right off.

Then follow with a little dish detergent in warm water to remove the slight residue the WD-40 leaves behind.

Works every time on old fashioned NON washable crayons.

Taylor says:

Thanks so much for your tip Kristyne!

This stuff is great for removing crayon for lots of surfaces, not just walls. Here's some more tips for removing crayon with WD-40.

Removing Crayon From Walls With Toothpaste

Has your little artist ever missed the paper and gotten crayon all over the wall?

Try using white toothpaste and an old toothbrush to get your wall clean.

Just rub the toothpaste onto the wall with the old toothbrush and remove those crayon marks!

Be careful not to rub too hard or you will rub off the paint!

Comment From Reader About This Suggested Technique

Kay from Brown Deer, WI, sent me a comment saying

"There's more to toothpaste than meets the eye (or tooth!)

I used regular toothpaste on crayon, when it was on walls and tables. It works really well and really fast.

It would probably work on other surfaces or material too, but it might also discolor it so you would want to check that first.

I use the small tubes we get from the dentist every visit. It's usually the most basic of toothpaste."

Taylor says:

Thanks so much Kay for adding this suggestion for how to clean items in your home with toothpaste!

I actually have a whole page on the site about uses for toothpaste around your home, since it can be a great cheap and already available way to clean some messes up around your home.

Uses for toothpaste around your home

I do suggest, just as you do though, to be careful of what toothpaste you use for the purpose. For example, basic white toothpaste without whiteners or bleaches will work best for these tasks!

Homemade Cleaning Recipe For Removing Crayon From Wall

by Ashley
(Wylie, Tx, USA)

Ashley shared her homemade cleaning recipe for removing crayon from walls with me, plus asked a question about tweaking the recipe.

Ashley says:

I have a stain removal recipe for crayon off of the wall, but what I want to ask is, do you know another essential oil besides grapefruit oil I can use with this recipe and will have the same effects?

Here's the recipe:

  • 2 Tbl Borax

  • 3 C warm water

  • 1/2 C distilled white vinegar

  • 6 drops grapefruit essential oil

  • 1 tsp liquid castile soap

Directions:

You add borax, water, vinegar and essential oil to a spray bottle, then shake to emulsify, then add soap and shake again.

Lightly spray on walls and wipe with damp sponge, rinsing sponge as needed, working from the bottom up so streaks don't form.

I know that grapefruit essential oil mixed with vinegar is said to be a wonderful all purpose spray so is there something else like it that I can use?

Taylor says:

Ashley, thanks for sharing this homemade cleaning recipe with me.

I am assuming you just don't have any grapefruit essential oil around, correct? Well, the nice thing about grapefruit oil, or any other citrus essential oil for that matter, is that it acts as a powerful degreaser. (Learn more about the how to use essential oil for cleaning here).

If you don't want to use (or can't use) grapefruit EO you can use any other citrus oil, such as lemon, lime, orange or tangerine for example. The most powerful of them are lemon and orange, typically, but they all have the degreaser.

I've answered this question as part of my cleaning help section on the website. You can check out other questions I've answered, or ask me your own, to see if you can stump me.

In addition, I'd love it if you shared a homemade cleaners recipe with me here, or read over 80 others already submitted.

I Got Crayon From My Wall With A Pencil Eraser

by Melissa
(Adrian, MI)

I received this great tip from Melissa sharing how she got rid of crayon on her wall with a pencil eraser.

Melissa says:

One time is all it took and it didn't cost me anything!!!

My son decided to color a mural on his wall with crayon when I put him in time out. For some reason I decided to pick up his pencil and see what would happen if I used the eraser (thinking it can't make it any worse!)

Much to my amazement the crayon came right off!!! Just make sure the eraser has already been used so it doesn't have the film on it and watch it erase like magic!!! Beats paying the Magic Eraser price from Mr. Clean!!

Taylor says:

Thanks Melissa for this great tip! I love to find ways to clean up things in our homes without special products you have to buy, and instead using something already on hand.

***Update: Another SR101 reader commented on this post, saying she also had positive results with this tip. She said:

Using a pencil eraser works great to remove crayon from a painted wall, takes a once over and hardly any elbow grease at all! Thanks for information.

Goofy College Kids Trying To Get Crayon Off Walls

Below is a video that I really liked because it shows what happens when you get crayon all over your walls.

These college students thought they were moving out, and they had to repaint the wall anyway, so they would just color all over the walls with crayon.

After all, they thought, it says Crayons are washable, right?

Well, the video shows them trying to remove it, by scrubbing, WD-40, Goo Gone, and with hair dryers (all of which work pretty well, by the way, even though it is still a lot of work if you've got a lot of marks).

Basically, the video shows that it can be quite difficult to remove all those crayon marks, so be as careful as possible to keep your little artists on the paper as much as possible.

Be warned, one of the scribbles on the wall you can see is a curse word, so if that offends you, don't watch.

Cleaning Crayon From Wall With Fingernail Polish Remover

Below is a video about cleaning crayon from a wall with fingernail polish remover.

I have to say that when you watch the demonstration it doesn't actually seem to be working very well.

Instead, she uses a time lapse and then the marks are off the wall, and she says you just have to rub a lot.

Therefore, I am not necessarily endorsing this method. I am reserving judgment. I would love to hear how it works for someone, so respond in the comments below.

Here is the video:

Have you ever used this method for cleaning crayon marks off the wall?

If so, please tell me in the comments if this works for you for getting that crayon off your walls.
